How I Write 'immortal' Characters

By Dano

My long-lived characters (because nothing except Gods are truly immortal and I won't write a God) have all been ordinary people. They are not kings or heroes or even particularly honorable, just people with simple goals, human failings, and several or more lifetimes of experience to draw from. Their minds have been exposed to multiple cultures for extended periods of time, and have integrated into them. Mostly however, through their own ingenuity, they have survived.

Vampires who murder, like Mundanes who murder, are generally caught. The difference is that a vampire won't get a fair trial. One has only to look at history to see this, as many corpses were dug up as lately as the nineteenth century and 'staked' into their coffins to keep them from wandering about at night. There was no more evidence against them than an outbreak of illness shortly after their death. Imagine if a tight knit society of that time were confronted with actual ex-sanguinated corpses, mass hysteria would have ensued. To survive any length of time they would have to have evaded detection throughout history, would remember, and probably would not change their habits quickly. Even in a modern, open society they would stay in the shadows.

A long lived character in any position of power would also be noticed after a few decades, let alone centuries, unless he changed identities. One has only to look at the likes of Dick Clark or George Burns to see this, Mr. Clark for his youthful appearance and Mr. Burns for his longevity. (Both men have sadly passed, but what's up with Bridgette Bardot?) They would not only have to integrate with changing societies, but remain transparent to them.

I accomplish this by placing my characters at the fringes of society where a little weirdness and changing identity would be overlooked. They have occupations that require travel, or anonymity, or both. In short, they appear as regular people with a few odd habits until you get to know them.

I’m Tenaj and I live in RP World

How many of you have heard of my people…
the Mayans.

In today’s world the Mayan’s are hailed as one of the most advanced civilizations to have abruptly abandoned their lands.  And if by some off chance you haven’t heard of us before, we are the ones that built the atomic clock predicting when the human race will cease to exist…December 21, 2012.

But I’m not like most from my lineage, my abilities go well beyond chiseling a calendar, building pyramids and offering up sacrifices.  Unlike most Mayans I’m an extremely rare half breed.  The spawn of an unworldly being and a Mayan slave girl, I was taken to the top of a pyramid where I was left as a sacrifice to the GODS. Saved by a great Mayan Priest who feared that the Mayan Warriors would surely put me to death if they ever learned of my survival, I was hidden away and raised in secret. It wasn’t until I reached adolescence that my eyes turned cerulean blue and I started to become aware of just how different from others I truly was. Realizing that I could no longer live amongst the Mayans for they would surely put me to death,  I left in search of others like me – others with an inner power so strong that a mere glance could cause death.  Although I appear to be in my twenties, I have traveled the world countless times throughout many centuries.  Always alone, moving on as I watched those that I cared for perish.

Then by chance I came upon a place that I had never been to before.  A world with no name and made the journey to the other side.  The side of the omniverse where vamps, shifters, demons, gods, and zombies –just to name a few – roam around freely.  There’s nowhere else in the  ethereal or underworld where the imagination of so many talented storytellers come together and run wild to bring their human brethren stories of love, adventure and turmoil.  If you’ve ever wanted to fall in love with a vampire, straddle the past and the future or root for the devil’s son then join us.

Whether you’re an avid reader, writer, or both…I’ll be waiting for you.

My Journey As A Writer
By Sapphire Lasair Criostal

I have always been interested in writing and when I first came to RPW, my writing skills, were I have to say almost non existent. I knew what I wanted to write but getting it down correctly was another matter entirely. When I first began to write my story, it was quite often a hit and miss affair, but the help and guidance I received from everyone within RPW was amazing. Slowly I began to grow, to expand as a writer and I became more confident in what I produced. Looking back over my story I can see how much I have grown, and I am now at the point where I feel confident enough to offer one of my stories for possible publishing. I am also moving into areas of writing that I would never have even considered a few months back. I can with honesty say that if it wasn't for RPW giving me the opportunity to join them, I wouldn't be where I am today.

I would like to pass on some advice I was given when I first joined RPW and was scared to write as I wasn't sure of my ability; Read..Read..Read. Read some of your favorite authors, see how they build their characters and stories. Use their words and ideas to help you create your own characters and weave your own stories, and before you know it you will be walking into a world where the only limit is your imagination...

Sapphire is a former character in the RP World line up who is currently writing the character story for publication. As soon as she has a book published we'll have her back to talk about it.

Always Something Happening

Have you checked us out yet? Don't be shy. We don't bite...much...and only if you ask. But stay away from the vampires and well anything else that haunts the night no telling what it may or may not do.
